We all have heard of CBD doing wonders for people suffering from epilepsy, arthritis, anxiety, depression, sleep-related problems. Can CBD help with digestive and bowel disorders too?

The answer is yes!

Most of us think that digestive disorders are stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, etc. Although these problems also need care and medication, there are many serious digestive problems such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome(IBS), Crohn’s disease, Colitis, Gastritis, etc. Stomach ache, diarrhea, constipation are symptoms of above mentioned digestive and bowel disorders.

Each year 60-70 million people in the US are diagnosed with a digestive disease. Digestive problems are one of the severe health problems in the US.

Side effects like vomiting and nausea are common among the individuals taking prescribed medications/drugs for digestive problems. People suffering from digestive disorders have to put up with these side effects along with the disease itself.

You would be surprised to read that CBD is a natural chemical and helps treat these diseases with minimal to no side effects. There are testimonials of various people across the internet, claiming CBD has helped them treat multiple diseases without side effects.

How does CBD help treat various digestive disorders?

A human body consists of various biological systems like the muscular system, nervous system, etc. The Endocannabinoid system(ECS) is one such biological system. ECS balances and regulates body processes such as appetite, digestion, homeostasis(balance in the body necessary for survival), etc.

The Endocannabinoid system consists of Endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes. Endocannabinoids are the molecules present in the body that binds to receptors telling ECS that it needs to take action. Receptors are of two types, CB1(found in the central nervous system) and CB2 receptors(found in immune cells). (Read here more about ECS).

For example, When you experience an injury, endocannabinoids bind to the CB1 receptor present in nerves to relieve pain and also bind to the CB2 receptor present in immune cells, telling that the body is experiencing inflammation.

When taken for digestive disorders, CBD boosts endocannabinoids and assists them in binding to receptors present in the digestive and immune system more effectively, thus helping ECS maintain balance in the body.

CBD also helps with the symptoms of digestive diseases like pain, inflammation, appetite, etc. Digestive disorders, like Crohn’s disease, causes inflammation of the digestive tract, leading to various symptoms. CBD reduces this inflammation by binding to receptors present throughout the body.

It is challenging to lead an everyday life with these diseases. CBD comes as a savior by reducing symptoms of these diseases without any side effects.

Studies showing the effectiveness of CBD for Digestive and Bowel disorders

Ulcerative Colitis is one of the conditions of Irritable bowel disease(IBD). Its symptoms include cramping, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or constipation. Studies have proved that CBD has helped patients with IBD by treating their symptoms and giving them a better quality of life.

According to the study, Medicinal Cannabis for Inflammatory Bowel Disease, users of cannabis reported that CBD positively affected them by treating IBD symptoms like abdominal pain, sleep, stress, cramping, and anxiety.

One of the main symptoms of IBS disease is a leaky gut. With a leaky gut, one finds it difficult to perform day to day activities. A study called, Cannabidiol restores intestinal barrier dysfunction and inhibits the apoptotic process induced by Clostridium difficile toxin A in Caco-2 cells showed that CBD restores intestinal barrier dysfunction, thus treating the problem of leaky gut.

A study called, An overview of cannabis-based treatment in Crohn’s disease showed that cannabis has therapeutic potential in IBD(Inflammatory Bowel Disease). The study further concluded that Cannabis can also help improve disease symptoms.

According to the US Centre for Disease Control, 1.3 percent of American adults are suffering from an IBD condition. A study conducted on the effects of CBD and palmitoylethanolamide(PEA- the chemical that can bind to cells in the body and reduce pain and swelling.) showed that both CBD and PEA reduced inflammation-induced permeability in the human colon caused by IBD.

Conclusion

Digestive Disorders are some of the most difficult health ailments to manage. This is because rarely is there a one size fits all solution; just a series of lifestyle and dietary changes to improve one’s condition. While there is still a lot of research/studies needed to fully examine the science behind CBD’s effects on the human body; sufficient evidence is available to favor the use of CBD as a remedy for digestive diseases.
