Epilepsy and Seizures

The brain acts out when you least expect it.

Most people think of seizures as something that knocks you unconscious and causes involuntary contractions. While this is partially true, it is only one of the kinds of seizures. You have epilepsy if you have a tendency of recurrent seizures.

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder in which nerve cells in the brain become disturbed, causing seizures. Seizures cause a change in your behavior, movements, and levels of consciousness. There are many types of seizures, varied by where and which part of the brain is affected.

Seizures can be as subtle as staring blankly into space for a few seconds/minutes, or it could be someone losing balance, falling onto the ground, and having convulsions.

It may seem like seizures are no big deal. But, seizures can cause accidents, when it affects someone driving or can make a person fall and hit their head.

While this may sound dangerous, it is certainly treatable. One of the alternative medicines that had gained traction in recent years for the treatment of Epilepsy/Seizures is CBD.

Charlotte Figi, the girl who inspired the CBD movement

Charlotte changed the way the public perceives CBD. She became the face of the CBD movement at the age of 5.

Charlotte suffered from Dravet syndrome, a severe type of epilepsy, and got her first seizure when she was three months old. By age 5, she had over 300 seizures a week.

After a comprehensive search, Charlotte’s mother found a cure in CBD. She started administering Charlotte CBD oil in conjunction with other epileptic drugs and noticed the change within a week.

Charlotte did not have any seizures for seven days in a row. Frequency of seizures reduced to 2-3 times a month. She had been successfully weaned from her other epileptic drugs too. Her story spread like wildfire, and families with similar problems started using CBD.

Treatment of epilepsy using CBD has been hotly debated for many years. However, in 2018, the FDA(U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved CBD for the treatment of seizures caused by epilepsy.

CBD Oil for Epilepsy

About 30 to 40 percent of people have difficulty in controlling seizures using traditional medicines. It can be confusing, complicated as to why the medication is not working. Such people can see the brain as an enemy as it is the organ that triggers seizures.

CBD oil can help such people control their symptoms and lead a better life. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation provided results that are critical preclinical evidence supporting CBD treatment of seizures.

CBD oil is a product derived from the cannabis plant. It is a mixture of CBD and a carrier oil like coconut oil, MCT oil, or any other oil.

Further, a research paper called, use of CBD in treating epilepsy, evaluated the use of CBD in addition to anti-epileptic drugs in severe treatment-resistant epileptic conditions and gave hope for patients who are resistant to traditional anti-epileptic drugs.

As in the case of Charlotte Figi, the use of CBD oil for epilepsy proved not only beneficial for kids but also for adults. Many studies have demonstrated that CBD oil works wonders for both kids and adults with severe epileptic conditions.

Conclusion

Recent researches have expanded potential uses of CBD for the treatment of seizures/epilepsy. While CBD is useful for people with treatment-resistant epileptic condition, an expert opinion must be sought before using CBD.

Further, scientific studies are needed to evaluate CBD’s benefits in epilepsy, although the available data is promising.
